I think gift cards are ok. As long as you think about what gift cards you are buying for someone you are giving them something they really want. If you know someone likes tools but do not know specifically what they want a gift card to home depot is good. Or say you want to buy someone a sweater but you are not sure about their size. Plus websites like www.cardswap.ca in Canada and plastic jungle in the US make it possible to retain some value from cards you might not want.
